Welcome to our website! At West End Day School, we think it’s important for children—all children—to understand themselves on many levels. This understanding helps them identify what comes easily to them, as well as what they need to work a bit harder on. It also helps them address their feelings about themselves, their peers, and the world around them. For this reason, I’m often told that every neighborhood should have an elementary school like West End Day.
We have found that there are many uneven, bright children with mild learning, language or social problems who are not reaching their true potential by either “slipping through the cracks” in mainstream settings or being “warehoused” in special education programs. And what we often find is that the learning issues are not these youngster’s major hurdles, but how they feel about them.
Regardless of the root of their problems, we understand that children’s feelings need to be addressed in order to help them successfully move forward. And we believe that treating these feelings and providing special education do not have to be independent ambitions. At West End Day, our approach is holistic, and it is our model of integrating a therapeutic special education that makes us so unique and recognized for our success with smart, varied children.
In our small, therapeutic environment, a coordinated therapeutic team allows us to address each child with one united goal: to help our youngsters feel stronger so they can reach their full potential. In order to do this, we draw on an emotional perspective that enables us to better understand and make use of the meaning of a child’s actions, rather than focus solely on their behavior. Our children feel safe, they appreciate their “grown-up friends” who help them, and they respond to being part of their treatment process. Our team approach does not stop at school; parents join us in helping children grow in all facets of their lives.
Every day at West End Day, I see children transcending and feel fortunate to head such a remarkable program. I welcome you to come visit this unique program for yourself.
